Meet Derek Fish…

Having spent 20 years running the Unizulu Science Centre (USC), I returned to my studies in 2007 and completed a masters and then a PhD in Physics Education with a study on what Grade 9 visitors (from different backgrounds) to the USC learn during a Music Show.

As a follow up to my PhD, I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to spend 2023 in Corvallis, Oregon (USA) working with two amazing researchers, John and Lynn. Anyone who has read any Museum/ Visitor Studies literature will be familiar with the names “Falk and Dierking” as arguably the leading researchers worldwide in this field and the authors of “The Museum Experience”.

Aside from the amazing opportunity to work through “The Museum Experience” with the authors, I visited 22 museums and spoke at 10 universities all over the USA.

In this Coffee Chat I will share the experiences overseas, summarise what is happening collaboratively in Visitor Studies/ Museums Research in the USA (and Europe) and discuss efforts to implement some of these successes in Southern Africa.
